NYC DOT kicked off their public workshop series this week, presenting design details for the Grand Army Plaza redesign and collecting community feedback.

The workshops

Three sessions — two in-person at the plaza and one virtual:

  • April 23 (4–6pm) — at the plaza, south of the Arch ✅
  • April 25 (10am–1pm) — at the plaza, south of the Arch
  • April 29 on Zoom (6–7:30pm) — register in advance

Rain locations are at the Brooklyn Public Library (main entrance for Apr 23, Flatbush Ave entrance for Apr 25).

The survey

The official DOT survey is open through May 31 — crossings, bike lanes, plaza layout, bus routing. The survey is on the official NYC.gov project page, where you can also review the latest design boards.

What DOT is showing

The design has evolved based on community feedback from the 2022 and 2024 rounds:

  • New crossings to Bailey Fountain
  • Shortened crossings at Flatbush and Vanderbilt
  • Direct bike path from Prospect Park West to Vanderbilt Ave
  • Parking-protected raised bike lane on Plaza Street
  • Three plaza design concepts — Radial (modern, flexible space), Diagonal Grove (tree canopy), and Open Axis (historic character, large events) — all include seating, landscaping, and programmable space

DOT is also presenting detailed traffic flow analysis for Union St, Flatbush, Eastern Pkwy, and Vanderbilt approaches. See our FAQ for answers to common traffic concerns.

Why it matters now

The CPSD study phase is when DOT finalizes the design scope. Once it moves to capital construction, major changes get harder and more expensive. Community Board presentations are scheduled for May 2026, followed by Landmarks Preservation and Public Design Commission review over the summer.
