Quick roundup of last week at the plaza: DOT held its second round of public workshops on the Mamdani-backed redesign, and Streetsblog dropped a short video gathering on-the-ground reactions.

The video

Streetsblog NYC went out to the plaza with a camera and asked New Yorkers what they want — workshop attendees, neighbors, parents pushing strollers across the chaotic crossings. 2 minutes, well worth the watch:

DOT workshops: April 25 and 29

DOT held two public workshops last week — an in-person session at the plaza on Saturday April 25 (10am–1pm), and a Zoom session on Tuesday April 29 (6–7:30pm). Both walked attendees through the updated design boards and took live feedback.

The workshops are the main public input mechanism in the current design phase — alongside the official DOT survey, which is open through May 31, 2026. After the survey closes, DOT will present to Community Boards 6, 8, and 9 this spring (dates not yet announced) and continue into Landmarks Preservation and Public Design Commission review over the summer.

If you missed the workshops, the survey is still the most direct way to weigh in on the details — protected bike lanes, raised crosswalks, the three plaza concepts (Radial / Diagonal Grove / Open Axis), and the Greenmarket footprint are all still being shaped.

What’s next

  • Survey closes May 31take it now
  • Community Board 6, 8, and 9 presentations expected this spring
  • Landmarks + Public Design Commission review scheduled for summer 2026
